(MENAFN) In an interview with American website Al-Monitor on Sunday, Iranian foreign minister has stated that the United States and Saudis have not been able to bring the Yemenis to their knees through their heavy bombardment and arms.
In response to a question about Iran's reactions if the United States ditches the nuclear deal known as the JCPOA, Zarif said "the Trump administration was never in the JCPOA. They made sure over the last 15 months that Iran would not benefit from the economic dividends of the JCPOA, and so whatever they do in three weeks would not be a major break from the past."
Talking about Saudi,US-led operation against Yemen, the Iranian official said that "all they have been able to do, in spite of the very serious imbalance in military capability -with all the beautiful military equipment that they buy from the United States- they haven't been able to bring the people of Yemen to their knees."
He went on to say "And I don't think they will ever be able to do that. That's why the sooner they realize that there needs to be a political solution in Yemen, the sooner we will get out of this nightmare in Yemen with a million people dying from cholera and a lot of people dying from malnutrition -almost 20 million people [suffering] from malnutrition."
Foreign Minister Zarif arrived in New York on Thursday for a six-day visit to attend the UN Meeting on Peace-building and Sustaining Peace on April 24-25.
