SC dismisses plea seeking deletion of 'Jauhar' scene in 'Padmaavat'

In a victory for the entire team of 'Padmaavat', the Supreme Court today dismissed a plea seeking deletion of scenes from the film.

Social activist Swami Agnivesh had approached the apex court on the grounds that 'Padmaavat' glorifies the practice of 'Jauhar'.

However, the bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra rejected his plea which also sought filing of an FIR against the makers.

The bench, which also comprised Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said, "Once CBFC clears the movie, deletion of scenes cannot be directed."

The Supreme Court has come to the film's rescue in the past as well. On January 18, the court had lifted the ban on 'Padmaavat' and ensured that it releases pan India.

'Padmaavat' was delayed by almost two months pertaining to the protests by multiple fringe groups.

The film finally hit the screens on January 25 and made up for all the trouble it went through.

It took a smash opening, grew from strength to strength in the upcoming days and emerged the highest grosser of 2018 raking in over Rs. 300 crore.
