Pashtun movement leaders arrested ahead of rally

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Several leaders and activists of a new Pakhtun movement have been arrested ahead of a planned protest in Lahore, the capital of Pakistan€™s Punjab province.

Angry over the unfair treatment of the community by the government, the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) is to stage a rally at Mochi Gate in Lahore on Sunday (today).

On the eve of the rally, police arrested a number of leaders of the PTM, Awami Workers Party (AWP) and Pashtun students during raids on a local hotel and the Punjab University.

As social media reported the arrests in a late-night swoop, protests erupted in Quetta and Peshawar, capitals of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

In a tweet, PTM leader Manzoor Pashteen called for protests across the country against the Lahore arrests.
