Helmandis seem uninterested in voter registration

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Distrust in sitting lawmakers and insecurity are cited as main reasons behind people€™s unwillingness to register to vote in the upcoming elections in southern Helmand province.

Independent Election Commission (IEC) chief for Helmand Ahmad Shah Sahibzada said he was unhappy with the way the registration process was going on in the province.

He said despite the fact that security officials had assured full security, people remained scared and were not coming to registration centers in large numbers.

He said it was Hajj and Religious Affairs Department€™s and ulema€™s responsibility to spread awareness regarding the registration process.

He did not disclose the number of people so far registered as voters but another source, wishing anonymity, said until now 5,527 people, including 707 women, had registered to vote.

Governor Hayatullah Hayat said strict security measures had been put in place around the sites of registration and demanded people get Tazkera -- ID cards -- and register as voters.
