Pakistan- Minor girl dies, several affected as measles spreads in Landikotal

LANDIKOTAL: A two-year-old girl has died of measles and several other children have been affected in Paseedkhel area of Landikotal sub-division of Khyber Agency.

The people of Paseedkhel area said the disease is spreading rapidly in the region and parents of the affected children are facing difficulties due to unavailability of anti-measles vaccine.

Gul Anwar Sherwani, a local resident, told TNN that is two-year-old niece Waseema has died of measles and two other nieces have also been infected. He said several children have been affected from the disease, while vaccine is not available in the area which is a cause of grave concern. He demanded the Health Department to send teams to the affected areas to administer vaccination to the affected children.

The local people said there is no health centre for the area having a population of over 5,000 due to which they take their patients to Landikotal, which is nine kilometres away. They demanded establishment of a health centre in the area on priority basis.

Medics say measles is a viral infection which mostly spreads among children at the end of winter and summer seasons. It spreads through contact with infected mucus and saliva. Its main symptoms include fever, dry cough, runny nose, sore throat, inflamed eyes and skin rash.
