Pakistan- Rao Anwar sent to jail on judicial remand in Naqeeb murder case


(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) PESHAWAR: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Karachi on Saturday sent former SSP Malir Rao Anwar, the main accused in the murder case of Naqeebullah Mehsud, to jail on judicial remand till May 2.

Police produced Rao Anwar in the court after completion of his one-month physical remand. Police have presented 12 accused in the case before the court.

Police requested the judge to send Rao Anwar and another suspect Shakeel Feroze to jail on judicial remand as their custody was no longer needed for investigation. The court sent Rao Anwar and Shakeel Feroze on judicial Rehman till May 2 and also extended the judicial remand of 10 other accused, including SP Qamar Ahmed and adjourned the hearing.

Journalists asked Rao Anwar at the court was Naqeebullah really a terrorist or not. Rao Anwar said he will answer this question after submission of final challan in the case.

Naqeebullah Meshud from South Waziristan Agency was killed in a fake encounter in Karachi allegedly by a police team led by Rao Anwar. After several protests by people demanding investigation into the extrajudicial killing of Naqeeb, the Chief Justice of Pakistan took suo motu notice of the incident. Subsequently, a five-member Joint Investigation Team (JIT) was formed on directives of the apex court to inquire into the death of Naqeeb.

In his statement to the JIT, Rao Anwar reportedly blamed his two subordinates for the murder of Naqeeb.
