(MENAFN) Libya's National Oil Company chief revealed the country to be paying the price for fuel smuggling with more than USD750 million per year.
The EU has received an appeal from NOC president Mustafa Sanalla to tackle smuggling through measures that include capturing ships in the Mediterranean.
The head of the NOC pointed out during an address at a conference that "the impact of fuel smuggling is destroying the fabric of the country."
The president added "the fuel smugglers and thieves have permeated not only the militias which control much of Libya, but also the fuel distribution companies which are supposed to bring cheap fuel to Libyan citizens."
He continued "the huge sums of money available from smuggling have corrupted large parts of Libyan society."
