(MENAFN) President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe were confirmed to have not been successful in settling on an agreement to excused Japan for tariffs the US imposed on steel and aluminum imports.
After the conclusion of the two-day talks, both leaders have settled to recommence discussions over a new trade deal that is "free, fair and reciprocal".
In response to a question about the tariffs, the US president said "if we can come to an arrangement on a new deal, that would certainly be something we would discuss."
President Trump's statement was made during a joint press conference held at Mar-a-Lago club, his private property where the leaders had dinner and played golf.
Trump also explained that an exemption was not possible at the moment, seeing how the trade deficit between the US and Japan reached a very high level.
