Qatar- Call to empower youth in the Muslim world

Baku: Minister of Culture and Sports, H E Salah bin Ghanem bin Nasser Al Ali, has reaffirmed the need to empower youth in the Muslim world.

The Minister made the remarks during the opening session of the meeting of Their Excellencies Ministers of youth and sports of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states, which takes place as part of the fourth session of the Islamic conference, currently underway in Azerbaijan's capital of Baku under the theme 'Solidarity in Action for Youth Development.

The Minister highlighted the importance of meeting the ambitions of youth in the Muslim world and working to empower them by raising their capacities for serving their homelands and nation, calling for the need to provide the appropriate environment for youths to offer their best. During the meeting, the State of Qatar was recognised for its efforts in supporting the activities of Jerusalem as Capital of the Islamic Youth, which was launched in February, in addition to the cooperation of the Ministry of Culture and Sports with the Palestinian Ministry of Youth and Sports to make the event succeed.

The Minister and head of the delegation received the recognition trophy on behalf of Qatar. The conference will review the OIC youth strategy ahead of adopting it at the end of the event today. The youth strategy draft emphasises the priority of working in the framework of youth empowerment and investing in youth's future as a key priority, in addition to inviting member states to develop national policies, action plans and mechanisms that guarantee the protection of the rights of young people and improve their economic and social life and status, as well as their educational and knowledge levels and opportunities for participation in the decision-making process.

The strategy also urges the establishment of joint working mechanisms among member states to exchange experiences and support and coordinate on youth policies.

In addition, the conference discusses the situation of youth in OIC member states, the activities of the Islamic Conference Youth Forum for Dialogue and Cooperation, the activities of the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF), the joint work plan for youth and the international program of the Islamic Youth Capital. Moreover, the conference reviews means of implementing the decisions on youth and sports by member states in coordination with the OIC general secretariat as well as the organisation's affiliates in the field of youth and sports.
