US launches Tess satellite in planet hunting mission

(MENAFN) The US space agency has sent its Tess satellite into space with a task to discover new worlds that are past the Solar System.

The satellite has been launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida, as it aims to collect a catalogue that other telescopes can study for further comprehensive analysis.

The leader of the mission and its principal investigator George Ricker explained "Tess is equipped with four very sensitive cameras that will enable it to monitor nearly the entire sky."

The experts from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology further added "the types of planets that Tess will detect are revealed by a process called a transit. We can see the shadow, effectively, of the planet as it passes in front of its host star."

The most recent space telescope to be designed by Nasa has launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at 22:51 GMT.
