Qatar requests discussions with FIFA on enlarging 2022 World Cup

(MENAFN) Qatar has requested for discussions to be carried out with FIFA so as to study the possibility of raising the 2022 World Cup to reach 48 teams after the body voice interest in expanding the tournament.

It comes following an appeal South American football nations made to fast-track the jump from 32 to 48 teams at World Cups by four years.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed that he was open to the CONMBEOL appeal as he recognizes that a feasibility study was a necessity.

However, the Qatari infrastructure is to be exacerbated if an approval was given to the enlargement of the tournament.

In its statement to AP, the Qatar World Cup organizing committee noted "before any decision is taken it is important that discussions are held on the operations and logistics of an increase in size of the tournament in Qatar."
