Oman- UN committed to solving conflict in Yemen, says special envoy


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Martin Griffiths, the special envoy of the UN secretary general to Yemen saidon Sundaysaid that the world body is committed to solving the conflict in the war-torn country.

Addressing a press briefing at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Griffiths affirmed the importance of good relations of Oman with Yemen.

After discussions with H E Yousuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah, Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs, Griffiths hailed his meetings in Oman.

Griffiths said that he is visiting Oman as the special envoy of the UN secretary general to Yemen. Griffiths said that he had visited Yemen as the special commissioner to refugees and that he is keen to ensure peace in the country.

Griffiths said that he has visited Riyadh in Saudi Arabia and Yemen to talk to the parties and will return to Riyadh again to take the initiative forward.

During his visits, Griffiths said that he felt a real desire to achieve peace and start political negotiations to stop war and put an end to the sufferings of Yemeni people.

Responding to a question about the role of the UN in managing conflicts, he said that the world body seeks to solve disputes and establish peace at the earliest.

He said that as per its charter, the UN believes that Yemeni people own the future of their state and that 'Yemen First' is the motto we believe in. He highlighted the positive role of neighbouring countries describing it 'very useful'.

He said that all neighbouring countries of Yemen believe in the importance of having an independent and prosperous Yemen that enjoys internal peace, as well as peace with its neighbours. Griffiths said that he will brief the UN Security Council about the visit he made.

He affirmed his confidence in the views of the members of UN Security Council about Oman's and Yemen's neighbouring countries' desire to achieve peace in near future.
