Trump replaces national security advisor with hawk John Bolton

(MENAFN- Asia Times)

US President Donald Trump has named the hawkish former US ambassador to the UN, John Bolton, as his new national security advisor. Bolton will replace H.R. McMaster, who will retire after an entire year of speculation that the president was considering his removal.

Among Bolton's hardline views is a stated belief that a pre-emptive strike on North Korea would be justified, as he argued in commentary published in The Wall Street Journal last month. He has also argued in the same publication that the United States should reconsider the 'One-China Policy,' and look at the possibility of stationing American troops on Taiwan.

Though Bolton's views are widely considered to be outside of the mainstream in Washington, as national security advisor he will not face a congressional confirmation process. The role traditionally influences the flow of national security policy advice to the president.
