Former Sri Lankan President's son prevented from flying to US


(MENAFN- NewsIn.Asia) Colombo, March 22 (newsin.asia) - Namal Rajapaksa, Sri Lankan opposition parliamentarian and son of former President, Mahinda Rajapaksa, tweeted on Thursday that he was prevented from boarding an Emirates flight to Houston as US officials had instructed the airline not to let him board.

Namal was in Russia after being invited as an independent election observer for the Russian Presidential Election. He was to travel to Houston to attend the funeral of his aunt.

"Emirates Air Moscow informs I wont make my Houston flight as US officials instruct them them not to let me board.Valid reason yet to e received.US has the sovereign right of course.Sure it has nothing to do with my name being part of the Sri Lankan opposition or my travel to Russia," the tweet said

Dr.G.l.Peiris, leader of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) to which Namal belongs, said that there is no information beyond what Namal has tweeted and therefore it is not possible to comment on the reasons behind the US move,

"All we know is that he had been prevented from boarding," Peiris.

Namal's Coordinator for Foreign Affairs Mark Maurice said that Namal was prevented from boarding the Emirates flight at Dubai.

"No more information is available. He has some meetings in Dubai. After finishing them, he will come back," Mauice told newsin.asia
