S.Korean spending on private education increases


(MENAFN) Monthly spending on private education increased 33 percent in 2017 compared with 10 years earlier, indicating the South Koreans' enthusiasm for education.

A survey by South Korea's statistics agency and the education ministry showed that households spent a monthly average of 384,000 won per child on private tutoring in 2017, up from 288,000 won in 2007.

South Koreans spend large amounts of money on private tutoring for their children on expectations that private education will help them enter prestigious universities.

The survey also showed that the portion of low-income families' children receiving private education sharply dropped over the 10 years.
