Qatar- HMC urges public to reduce salt intake

DOHA: Dietetics and Nutrition Department at the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has held several activities aimed at encouraging public to reduce salt intake. Visitors and patients across HMC hospitals were educated about the best ways and practices to reduce salt intake and about the five ways to reduce five grams of salt daily.

In addition, they also demonstrated some food samples that are high in salt and that contain hidden amounts of salt and how to read the nutrition labels, Reem Al Saadi, Director of the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition at HMC told media persons recently.

The activities were held as part of an initiative by the Ministry of Public Health to reduce salt consumption in the population and coincide with the Salt Awareness Week between March 11 and 18. All events include educational activities on the dangers of using large amounts of salt in foods.

'This initiative is coming from the MoPH based on the studies which show that the daily salt consumption of individuals for salt reach up to 15 gram while the recommended is less than five gram per day, said Al Saadi.

'The need to raise awareness about the risk of high salt consumption comes with its association with disorders like hypertension, cardiovascular diseases as well as kidney diseases, he added.
