2 positive polio cases detected in Kunar, Kandahar

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) on Friday said two positive polio cases have recently been registered in Kandahar and Kunar provinces.

A statement from MoPH received by Pajhwok Afghan News, said the cases were detected in Ghazi Abad district of Kunar and Shah Walikot district of Kandahar province.

€œThese two children who unfortunately would suffer permanent disabilities had never been vaccinated against polio virus,€ the source said.

The statement said that the cases were detected in families that always rejected anti-polio vaccination and never allowed any health volunteers to vaccinate their children.

This is an alarm to all parents that kids€™ paralysis is real and a serious threat, the ministry added.

According to the MoPH, five cases of paralysis have been registered in Afghanistan this year.

Currently an anti-polio drive is ongoing countrywide and it would cover around a million children under five years of age.

The ministry says polio virus could be rapidly transferred and the only preventable way was vaccination.

The polio virus still affects children in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria.
