Syrian army takes hold of 70 percent of Eastern Ghouta area


(MENAFN) The Syrian army said on Friday that it had captured 70 percent of rebel-held areas in the Eastern Ghouta countryside of the capital Damascus.

According to the general command of the Syrian army, tens of towns in the Eastern Ghouta countryside of Damascus have been recaptured by the Syrian army, and that thousands of people have fled the area though humanitarian corridors set up by the Syrian army in Eastern Ghouta.

The army called on the people to leave the rebel-held areas in Eastern Ghouta, stressing resolve to continue fighting till restoring stability and security to all of Syria.

Four major rebel groups are currently positioned inside Eastern Ghouta, namely the Islam Army, Failaq al-Rahman, Ahrar al-Sham, and the Levant Liberation Committee, known as the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front.
