Iraq removes ban on Kurdistan airports

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, Iraq decided to lift the ban it imposed on Kurdistan Region flights since September, Iraqi News reported.

Following the meeting with police officers and Kurdish airports employees, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi made the announcement, according to a statement by his media office.

Iraq's federal government imposed the international flight ban on Sep. 29 as retaliation for the Kurdistan Region's independence referendum held four days earlier, which saw 93% of the population voting for secession from Iraq.

Kurdish officials have repeatedly stated that the ban has severely damaged the economy of the Kurdistan Region, forcing many companies to close offices and lay off staff.
