TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design. TED can be summarized as a series of international conferences which aim to spread and disseminate new and distinctive concepts to the world, under the motto 'Ideas Worth Spreading' .

A TEDx event is a platform which falls under the TED umbrella. A TEDx event is organized by local institutions in various countries across the world with the goal of bringing people together and immersing them in an experience similar to TED, but within their own country and community.

A TEDx event can be divided into two main components: the first is the opportunity to watch speakers perform live on stage and delve deep into much-needed conversation. The second is the supplementary videos from the TED website.

An event that is organized by a local institution is given the label 'TEDx' as the 'x' stands for 'independently organized event'. A local TEDx event is subject to many rules and regulations by TED, to ensure a high standard of quality is delivered to participants.

Student organizers of Oman Medical College have brought together TEDxOMC's premiere event under the theme of 'The Missing Link', on Friday the 9th of March 2018, at the Hormuz Hotel, Muscat.

The conference boasted an impressive collection of 8 inspirational speakers who were divided equally into four, well-thought out sessions.

Session 1: The Missing Link in Scientific Research.

The first speaker for the first session of the day was Mr. Mohammad Al Anazi, who holds a Master of Biomedical Sciences, is a lecturer at the University of Tabuk, and is currently pursuing his PhD at the University of Monash and Hudson Institute of Medical Research.

Mr. Mohammad held a riveting talk about the missing link between the Zika Virus and Glioblastoma Multiforme, the most common and aggressive of brain tumours. Mr. Mohammad revealed the possibilities of using a pathogenic virus, such as the Zika virus, to attack and eventually overcome this tumour.

The second speaker of The Missing Link in Scientific Research was Dr Adhra Al-Mawali, a researcher specializing in genetics and the current director for the Center of Studies and Research within the Ministry of Health. Dr. Adhra highlighted the missing link between the policy makers, the decision makers, and the researchers – and the victim of this gap being society who should be the recipient of the benefit of all research conducted.

Session 2: The Missing Link in Day-To-Day- Life .

First speaker of this session is Ms. Marwah Saleh, a senior medical student at Oman Medical College who holds a Master in the science of genetics. Ms. Marwah spoke about the missing link between dreams and reality and the steps that students can take to chase down their dreams. Ms. Marwah speaks from personal experience as she had studied genetics in the University of Calgary, Canada, while her life-long dream and passion was always medicine but she continued on with her journey and now she is mere months away from obtaining her MD.

The second speaker of the second session, HE Dr. Hilal Al Sabti, the executive president of Oman Medical Specialty Board. Dr. Hilal spoke passionately about the diminishing Human Touch in our interactions with patients due to the rapid development of artificial intelligence within the medical field. Dr. Hilal emphasized, and with good reason, that the Human Touch will never be replaced by modern machinery as these interactions between doctor and patient are the very foundation of medicine.

Session 3: The Missing Link in Technology and the Arts

Mr. Sultan Al Subhi is an Omani inventor with a passion for innovation and the creator of Wudu 1. Mr. Sultan spoke about the importance of innovation meeting current societal needs and demands, supplementing his point with multiple examples of great and useful inventions of the past that were too ahead of their time so they were not welcomed. And for the very first time, Mr. Sultan revealed his latest invention to do with improving WiFi signaling.

'The Arts' was given by Mr. Hamad Salim, a screen-writer, film producer, and co-founder of Tarish Films – an Omani entertainment company. Mr. Hamad has a profound belief in the effect of stories to inspire, change beliefs, and provide jobs. A belief he proved with his talk which wove innovation into the fabric of our Omani heritage, customizing it for modern consumption. He also intimated the process of filmmaking and the limitless job opportunities that could be created by a simple story.

Session 4: The Missing Link in Dealing with Backlash

Mr. Mohammed AlMuftada is a fourth year pharmacy student at Oman Medical who embraced the adversity of being physically disabled and transformed it into an opportunity to challenge himself and all those around him to achieve his dream. AlMuftada started off his speech by stating 'I was born without hands but I found that the missing link in my life were not my missing arms… but the way I viewed myself.' AlMuftada revealed that all the negative comments and mean stares he received through his life were only fuel for his motive and mere wind under his wings.

Our 4 sessions were concluded with Mr. Hamed Al-Amri, who believed that life can only be lived if we aim to be alive, not just survive. Hamed spoke about how we are all the result of societal molding despite being born unique. The realization that we all turn into clones of one another to avoid standing out, pushed Mr. Hamed to make a conscious change in his life, the most important one being a social experiment and personal challenge of camping from Salalah to Muscat in 20 days, with air bicycles as their only mode of transport, accompanied by his supportive and loving wife, Mrs. Wiam. Mr. Hamed concluded his speech with 'The be alive is a bold decision, indeed'.

TEDxOMC was generously sponsored by Oman Medical College and NewLeaf Uniforms, as well as Guven company and HMA Art for design.
