Kuwait- AFESD signs USD 165 mLn loan agreement with Tunisia


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TUNIS, Feb 28 (KUNA) -- The Kuwait-based Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD) and Tunisia have signed a loan agreement worth USD 165.4 million for supporting primary education in that Arab country.
In a statement to KUNA and Kuwait TV on Wednesday, Tunisia's minister of development and investment Ziad Al-Azari said the fund will contribute to carrying out a key program for the Tunisian government which is keen on developing and improving education.
He praised cooperation between Tunisia and the AFESD, which is one of Tunisia's leading financial partners due to its contribution to financing several development projects in sectors, which have economic and social priorities for Tunisians.
For his part, AFESD's director general and chairman Abdulatif Al-Hamad affirmed that the fund is committed to offering continued support for Tunisia to implement development projects.
He also stressed the importance of backing primary education to develop this vital sector and provide appropriate conditions for achieving the message of education perfectly.
The two sides also signed a grant agreement worth USD 900,000 to fund a study of a project on linking the city of El Kef, northwest of Tunisia, to highway.
The AFESD has significant contributions to supporting development projects in Tunisia. It has offered 59 loans worth USD 3.081 billion since 1974 that covered infrastructure, roads, dams, agriculture and industry, as well as primary and higher education.
The fund also provided to Tunisia grants worth USD 19.4 million for the completion of various technical studies and consultations.
It is an Arab regional financial institution, which aims to finance economic and social development projects. (end) khs.hs.hm
