Qatar- Cancer Society joins global efforts to increase public awareness

Doha: Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) joined global efforts to increase public awareness of all types of cancer, during an event organized at the Aspire Zone on Thursday.

The event brought together several expatriate communities and highlighted different initiatives taken by their countries in fighting cancer. Sheikh Dr Khalid bin Jabor Al Thani, Chairman of QCS, joined with several diplomats, officials and visitors joined the event marked to fight against cancer.

Several features and performances induced highlighting the importance of knowing the signs, doing early screening and taking preventive measures against cancer.

Dr Hadi Mohamad Abu Rasheed, Health Education Supervisor at QCS said, 'Qatar is a unique country with people from different countries. So we brought together several embassies showcasing their culture, festivity as well about cancer related programs implemented in their respective countries.

'We joined together to fight, talk about and break the stigma against cancer, he added.

The event was organized to mark the World Cancer Day which was marked on February 4. World Cancer Day is the one singular initiative under which the entire world can unite together in the fight against the global cancer epidemic.

World Cancer Day aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education about cancer, and pressing governments and individuals across the world to take action against the disease. This year it was held under the theme, ‘I can , We can' explores how everyone together and individually can do their part to reduce the global burden of cancer.

In Qatar a total of 1,466 new cancer cases were diagnosed in 2015, among which 1,417 were malignant and 49 in early stage, according to the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH). There were also 79 cancer-related deaths among Qataris in the same year. The data was published by MoPH with inputs from Qatar National Cancer Registry (QNCR).
