SAITM students seek legislative changes before KDU enrollment

(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) width="221" height="155" data-recalc-dims="1" />Medical students of the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) have called for legislative changes before they are transferred to the Kotelawala Defence University (KDU).

The Student Action Committee of the Faculty of Medicine at SAITM, in a letter to President Mithripala Sirisena, conveyed their heartfelt gratitude to him for providing them with a prompt solution to the SAITM issue.

A decision had been taken to transfer the medical students of the Malabe SAITM medical campus to the Kotelawala Defence University (KDU).

The decision was taken following a meeting with President Maithripala Sirisena.

However the students said that details of the transfer was not clear and therefore they requested the President to direct his attention with regards to their concerns when implementing the solution.

"We as the students of SAITM joined this institute after being scrutinized by the specified authorities (UGC and Higher Education Ministry ) with regards to our entry qualifications. Therefore we request you to enroll all the students who are currently at SAITM to KDU without any discrimination," the students said.

They also noted that their intention was to study in Sri Lanka due to certain financial and social issues, and so they strongly oppose any attempts made by certain parties to undermine the President's decision and send a fraction of students abroad to continue their medical education in foreign universities.

"We look forward to your excellency to come up with all the necessary legislative changes before our enrollment into KDU," the students said. (Colombo Gazette)
