Google launches its Augmented Reality system on 100 million devices

Google has launched its Augmented Reality system ARCore on 13 smartphones, including all Pixel phones, recent Samsung flagship phones, and OnePlus 5.
With ARCore 1.0, users can anchor virtual objects to any textured surface, and not necessarily just flat and horizontal ones.
Already working with other companies like Motorola, Xiaomi, and Nokia to on-board ARCore, Google claims it's currently present on 100 million devices.
Developers can now make their own ARCore-based apps

Earlier, Google had launched Star Wars- and Stranger Things-themed AR stickers on its Pixel phones.
But with ARCore 1.0, developers will be able to upload their own ARCore-based apps to the Play Store or even integrate already existing AR apps with ARCore's technology.
Further, users who weren't in ARCore's beta testing program or didn't have Pixel phones can now take a shot at AR.
Google has already partnered with big companies to push AR

Snapchat's parent company Snap is already allowing a simulation of users entering Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium with the help of ARCore. Other partners like JD.com and Porsche will let users preview rooms, furniture, and cars in AR through their phones.
Point phone camera at object and get information through Lens

Further, Google is also launching its Lens visual search tool on all phones as part of Google Photos.
The AI-powered computer vision system allows users to point their phones' camera at an object and get information about it in real-time. It features improved support for recognizing common animal and plant breeds.
Earlier, Lens was only present on Pixel phones as a Google Assistant update.
Google looking far ahead at combined usage of Lens, ARCore

Top Google official Aparna Chennapragada said that when combined, the two technologies (Lens and ARCore) can allow one to see a nice piece of furniture, take a picture for Google to identify, and preview it in the real world by fetching a 3D model.
