Ukraine to cut natural gas consumption by another 5 bcm in five years

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) Ukraine plans to reduce natural gas consumption by five billion cubic meters before 2022 due to the introduction of new facilities generating heat from alternative sources.

This is stated in a report by the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine following a meeting between the head of the agency, Serhiy Savchuk, Chief of Party of the USAID Municipal Energy Reform Project in Ukraine Diana Korsakaite, Chairman of the Board of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine Heorhiy Heletukha, representatives of the State Forestry Agency and the Regional Development Ministry as part of work on a draft law on the creation of the solid biofuel market in Ukraine.

"The replacement of gas consumption remains a priority for Ukraine. It is planned to reduce the use of natural gas by five billion cubic meters before 2022," Savchuk said.

He said that new power plants generating heat "not from gas" were being created in Ukraine's regions every year. Accordingly, demand for biomass fuels is also increasing. Therefore, there is a need for a transparent and competitive market for solid biofuels. This is also envisaged by the Energy Strategy of Ukraine for the period up until 2035.

The meeting participants discussed prospects for the use of different types of biomass for energy purposes: agricultural waste, crop and logging residues.

The parties agreed to work out ways to stimulate the creation of a transparent and competitive market for solid biofuels in the country, including using forestry waste as additional raw materials for heat generating capacities.

As reported, Ukraine from 2014 to 2017, Ukraine reduced the consumption of natural gas by the population, budget-sustained institutions and municipal heat supplying companies by six billion cubic meters.
