Brazil abandons proposed welfare reform bill

(MENAFN) Brazil was announced to be abandoning a welfare reform legislation which was believed to be the answer for taming the public shortfall.

During a press conference, Chief of Staff Eliseu Padilha declared "we had to conclude that in effect we could not begin the debate we had programmed for the 19th (of February), the debate of the social security reforms, and that we could not start the vote."

Unions along with social groups have condemned the social security reform package since it entails retirement age to be extended.

The bill requires 308 votes in order to be accepted, however the government was able to only collect around 270 votes that supported the reform bill.
