Talking points from Wigan vs Manchester City
20 Feb 2018

Not many teams across Europe have been on the winning side when they have faced Pep Guardiola's Manchester City this season.

League One side, Wigan Athletic are an exception.

Manchester City's hopes of winning the quadruple came to an end after a 1-0 defeat in the FA Cup against minnows Wigan.

So what went wrong for the most rampant side in Europe?

Fabian Delph's red card
1 man short

Manchester City's left back Fabian Delph was sent off in the 45th minute of the tie for a challenge on Max Power.

The referee first saw the rough tackle and pulled out a yellow card but he changed his mind after the opposition players surrounded him and complained about how dangerous the tackle was.

Delph was then directly handed a red card.

Tempers flared after Delph's red card
Heated atmosphere

Delph's sending off did not go well with most of the Manchester City players.

Sergio Aguero was seen having a spat with Wigan manager Paul Cook.

At the halftime break, Man City boss Pep Guardiola got into a heated argument with Paul Cook down the tunnel.

In the end, it was Paul Cook who had the last laugh.

Manchester City's defensive frailties showed up again
Vulnerable

Manchester City are one of the most threatening teams when going forward.

The Citizens are in free-scoring form, they can easily put a couple of goals past you on their day.

However, when it comes to defence the same cannot be said.

11 minutes from the final whistle, Will Grigg scored for Wigan to bring an end to the pulsating tie.

City just couldn't break down Wigan
1-0

Despite being a man down, Manchester City had 83% of possession and most of the time the ball was in Wigan's half, yet they failed to break down the hosts.

Fernandinho wasted a glorious chance while rest of the shots on target were not clinical.

Wigan's lone striker Will Grigg had just 19 touches in the entire game, but scored the lone goal.
