(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- At 91 years, Samail resident Said Masood al Hashmi may give a complex to today's youths. For Hashmi, trekking mountains is like a walk in the park. He is an inspiration for others too.
On Friday, he led a group of 233 adventure seekers to trek the imposing Jebel Akhdar mountains. The trek was organised by Al Falaj team in Samail Club under the title 'In the footsteps of our ancestors' to promote adventure tourism.
'Hashmi's energy, enthusiasm and resilience are a source of inspiration for all of us. A mountain guide by hobby, he loves taking his grandchildren on such adventure treks,' said Badour al Salhi, one of the participants in the Jebel Akhdar trekking event.
Badour said that the 20-member team organises this trekking event every year. 'This event saw 233 youths from different parts of the sultanate trekking 11km, starting from Wadi Halfin in Samail to Jebel Akhdar.'
Badour said that another aim of the team is to spread the importance of exercise and physical activities among people. 'With the initiative, we hope to popularise Wadi Halfin and the nearby areas as tourist attractions. Besides, the trekking helped us to know the possible routes our forefathers may have used to reach the remote villages in Jebel Akhdar since the transport system wasn't as developed then.'
Speaking of the challenges, she said, 'The terrain was a challenging one. We had to use special climbing gear in a few areas. We overcame all challenges through collaboration among team members. An ambulance and a rescue team too was on standby to deal with any kind of emergency.'
