Approx 7,000 candidates compete in Iraqi elections


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Baghdad: About 7,000 candidates are competing for the parliamentary elections in Iraq scheduled for next May, from 88 parties, while 1985 submitted their candidacy for the commission as candidates for Baghdad.

According to a source, 6904 candidates will compete for the elections of 88 parties and an electoral coalition to occupy 329 parliamentary seats, explaining that in Baghdad alone, there are 1985 candidate for 40 parties and an electoral coalition where they are expected to occupy 71 seats, including 69 general seats and one seat for Mandaeism, and one seat for Christians.

As for Basra, 522 people from 28 parties and electoral coalitions competed for the 25 seats in the province, while 907 candidates ran for the Nineveh governorate which are 34 seats, one for Christians and one for Shabak and one for Yazidis, for 44 parties and coalitions.

Candidates of Kirkuk numbered 291 candidates, from 31 parties and alliances, and will compete on 13 seats of the province, including one seat for the Christian component, while 173 candidates from the province of Erbil, Kurdistan, from 27 parties and a coalition, to compete for 16 seats, including one for the Christian, while 211 candidates from 26 parties and alliance, to occupy 18 seats allocated to Sulaymaniyah, and Duhok province third in the region has nominated 115 candidates, from 24 parties and a coalition to occupy 12 seats for the province, including one seat for the Christian component.
