Azerbaijan plays role of main link in region

The prospects of cooperation between Russia and Azerbaijan are very high, Honorary Chairman of the Presidium of the Russian Council for Foreign and Defense Policy Sergey Karaganov told Trend Feb. 19.

Karaganov made the remarks in Moscow on the sidelines of the Middle East conference of the Valdai Discussion Club, titled "Russia in the Middle East: Playing on All Fields".

Karaganov pointed to the prospects in the context of trilateral cooperation of Azerbaijan, Russia and Iran.

"I would like to stress the role of the North-South railway project in the development of regional cooperation, he said. 'In this context, Azerbaijan plays the role of a main link. This project also opens up prospects for development of economic interaction with India."

The International North-South Transport Corridor is meant to connect Northern Europe with Southeast Asia. It will serve as a link connecting the railways of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia. At an initial stage, it is planned to transport 5 million tons of cargo per year through the corridor and over 10 million tons of cargo in the future.
