Here's how you can bring back Google's 'View Image' button
19 Feb 2018

Last week, Google removed the 'View Image' button from its Images platform in a bid to prevent users from stealing pictures that are not licensed for free reuse.

However, the internet has already figured out a couple of ways to circumvent the update.

Here are three methods using which you can bring back the 'View Image' option on Google Images.

Install a Chrome browser extension called 'View Image'
Chrome Extension

Users can install a browser extension in Chrome or Opera, called 'View Image,' that will allow them to see the much sought-after button next to the images.

The extension re-implements both the 'View Image' and the 'Search by Image' buttons.

The extension is free and will work with Chrome for Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, or anywhere Chrome's full version can be used.

Use a Google-powered private search engine

Alternatively, users can also redirect their image searches through Startpage, which is an anonymous Google-powered search engine. It claims to be a private way to search Google.

The Images platform there will display the 'View Image' button as before without any extension. Through this, users can easily open any image in a separate tab.

Open the image in a new tab and you're sorted
New Tab

And as mentioned earlier, users can still right click on an image on the Google Images platform and select the 'Open image in new tab' option.

This will open the full-size picture in a separate tab. This is an easy workaround for the people who don't mind a couple of extra clicks.

Why did Google suddenly make this unpopular change?
Fact

According to reports, Google had rolled out the update as part of an agreement under its recent multi-year global licensing partnership with Getty Images. The deal allows Google to place Getty Images into its search results.
