Qatar- Katara Award for Holy Quran gets 1,429 entries

DOHA: The upcoming second edition of Katara Award for Holy Quran has received 1,429 entries, the Cultural Village Katara announced yesterday.

Held under the slogan 'Adorn the Quran with your voices, the competition will be broadcast on a special programme on Qatar TV during the holy month of Ramadan.

Katara General Manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, said that 18 Arab countries saw 1,273 participations, while 156 entries were from 37 non-Arab countries. He pointed out that the Northern Arab-African countries took the lead with 597 participations followed by Egypt and Sudan with 498 participations, Non-Arab countries with 156 participations, Iraq and the Levant with 109 and the GCC countries with 69.

Al Sulaiti said that this edition introduced new modifications for participation process requiring that participants should read three parts from the Holy Quran. The duration of each part must not exceed five minutes and two parts of which should be read with Tajweed in accordance with the known maqams. He added, 'This edition adopted the technique of reading with Tajweed while last year it was open and unspecified.

The Prize Competition Manager, Khalid Abdulrahim Al Sayed, said, 'The first jury committee already began its work in conjunction with the registration of participants to choose the top 100.

Al Sayed explained that the participants will compete through 20 episodes, each of which will see five participants compete. Only one participant from each episode will be chosen for the semi-final, which consists of five episodes, each of which will see four competitors and only one will be qualified for the final stage of the competition, where the five winners will be announced.

Al Sayed noted that the final jury committee consists of six members consisting of three members certified in Qira'at and rules of Tajweed and three specialists in maqams and voices evaluation.

A total of QR1.5m will be distributed to the winners. The first place will win QR500,000, the second place will receive QR400,000, and the third winner QR300,000. The fourth and fifth prize winners will take home QR200,000 and QR100,000 respectively.

Katara Award for Holy Quran seeks to encourage, discover and recognise outstanding Quran readers and present their talents to the world. In addition, the award aims to motivate the upcoming generations to adhere to their religion and recognize their responsibilities towards their faith, and encourage them to fully understand and comprehend the Holy Quran.
