DOHA: Hamad Port continues to make the country proud by accomplishing new feats. It has begun the new year with another achievement. The port received a total of 182 vessels in January, which was the highest number of vessels handled in a month since the start of operations at Hamad Port, which is the largest port in the region.
Compared to the previous month, the traffic has increased 15 percent as 159 vessels had harboured in December 2017.
According to Qterminals, 137 commercial vessels and 45 military/offshore vessels had called at the port last month. The $7.4bn port has played a significant role in defeating the unjust siege. The traffic at the port has increased significantly since the blockade was announced on June 5. A total of 99 vessels called at the port in June, compared to 182 in January this year, showing a rise of 84 percent.
The port has also maintained a consistent rise in the vessels traffic, which allowed uninterrupted supply of goods for the residents. Goods ranging from foods and beverages to raw materials for constructions projects continue to enter the country through sea route. The port is capable of handling 5,000 vessels per year and has a general cargo terminal that can handle 1.7 million tonnes of general goods per year.
According to the monthly bulletin of the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics (MDP & S), the traffic at Hamad Port has continued to rise after a brief slowdown in June. The port harboured 162 vessels in August 2017 compared to 110 vessels in same month in 2016. Net tonnage at the port rose to 1,296,300 tonnes in August 2017 against 615,200 tonnes in August 2016. On Month on Month (MoM) basis, the port saw 19.1 percent increase in number of vessel coming as 136 vessels harboured at the port in July 2017. Net tonnage at the port rose by 5.3 percent on MoM basis.
The port harboured 178 vessels in October last year showing a growth of around 20 percent compared to September 2017 when 150 docked at the port. The port had handled 171 vessels in November last year.
