DOHA: Al Gannas Association has announced an initiative to set the petfalcons free into the wild life.

Ali bin Khatem Al Mahashadi, Chairman of the association, yesterday said the initiative came in the context of the association's keenness to preserve falconry to maintain natural balance in this field.

The initiative came in response to proposals of Qatari falconers to preserve some endangered species of falcons and ensure their reproduction, Al Mahashadi pointed out.

Furthermore, he said the initiative is limited to Shaheen falcons at this stage, and in the near future the association will launch a campaign to encourage falconers to free this type of falcons.

Al Mahashadi pointed out several falconers had contacted the association immediately after the announcement of the campaign through social media. A number of interested falconers had expressed their desire to participate effectively the campaign to achieve its goals, he said.

On the first day of the announcement seven falconers have registered to release Shaheen falcons.

Al Mahashadi expects the number to rise by the day of delivery on February 25 when the association will receive the falconers who are interested to participate in this initiative from 8am to 8pm at Katara, building 33.

For his part, Mohammed bin Abdullatif Al Misnad, Vice President of Al Gannas Association, said that the names of all the falconers participating in this initiative will be written on an honouring board and will remain a permanent reminder at the association's headquarters.

Al Misnad pointed out that each falcon will carry the name of the Qatari falconer and a telephone number to contact, and the tracking device installed will be removed.

The association will not disclose the location of the falcons for fear of being hunted again.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has enlisted the falconry on the Unesco List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
