Sirajul Haq to US: Accept Taliban offer of talks

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): A Pakistani rightwing politician has urged the Trump administration to respond positively to Taliban€™s offer of talks on ending the 16-year-old conflict in Afghanistan.

Earlier in the week, the Taliban held out the rare proposal for dialogue in an open letter to the US Congress and American citizens. The militant movement also called for the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.

Addressing a workshop in Lahore on Friday, the Jamaat-i-Islami chief said decisions on ending wars were made at the negotiating table. He said human history was full of such decisions.

Senator Sirajul Haq said the US had been fighting against the mountains of Afghanistan for the last 17 years without any success. In fact, he remarked, the US decision to attack Afghanistan was a bigger blunder than the Soviet invasion.

It was an attack on the sovereignty and independence of a Muslim country, he said, adding the Afghans had been fighting for their freedom with great courage.

Haq noted hundreds of thousands of Afghans had been killed in the war but they had not accepted defeat. Even if the US continued the war for another hundred years, it could not defeat the Afghans, he concluded.
