The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway will be a very important element of the new Silk Road project, said Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
President Aliyev made the remarks as he was addressing the Fourth Ministerial Meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council in Baku Feb. 15.
'In late October last year, we launched in Baku a new project Baku-Tbilisi-Kars, which is a new railway link not only between three countries, but also between Asia and Europe, said President Aliyev.
He added that the BTK is already the shortest route from Asia to Europe it cuts the time needed to deliver cargos by more than two times and it is already rendering services to companies.
'Today the increase in cargoes shows that Baku-Tbilisi-Kars will be a very important element of the new Silk Road project. Of course, if there was no strong regional cooperation between Georgia, Turkey and Azerbaijan in the Caucasus, and if there were no oil and gas projects, the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars would probably be a project for history, not for reality. This is a real result that we have achieved, President Aliyev said.
