A joint communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Palau, an island country located in the western Pacific Ocean, was signed in New York on February 1.
The establishment of diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Palau, as well as the peoples, proceeds from the intentions to encourage cooperation and mutual understanding between the countries, according to the signed document.
As stated in the document, parties will be guided by the UN Charter, universally recognized norms and principles of international law, non-interference in the internal affairs of states, as well as territorial integrity and sovereignty of states.
Joint communiqués were signed by the permanent representatives of both countries to the UN, Yashar Aliyev and Ngedikes Olai Uludong.
Palau (Belau) is a group of islands in the Micronesia area of Oceania, to the southeast of the Philippines. It consists of some 340 coral and volcanic islands perched on the Kyushu-Palau Ridge and has an area of 466 square kilometers. It shares maritime boundaries with Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Federated States of Micronesia.
