(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Ministry of Health (MoH), represented by the Directorate General of Pharmaceutical Affairs & Drug Control (DGPADC), has issued a circular to withdraw four herbal medicinal products from the local market following periodical inspection visits to private pharmacies.
The drugs mentioned in the circular are Shark Extract tablets, Vimax capsules, Kamagra Oral Jelly and Dragon's Delay Spray, stated a press release.
Dr Mohammed bin Hamdan al Rubai, director general, DGPADC said, 'These herbal medicines have entered the sultanate through illegal ways for the purpose of financial gains without any regard to human health and without the approval of the concerned department in the directorate. It is contrary to the procedures followed in this regard. As none of these products were registered in the ministry, they are not allowed to be sold in the sultanate.'
He also added that laboratory tests performed on the products have proved that they contain chemical substances which are not mentioned in the formulation or in the leaflets attached to the products. It is considered as a commercial fraud since the manufacturers clearly mention that the products are natural herbal ones.
The products contain sildenafil, an active ingredient used in viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Dr Rubai said that this substance has a number of adverse side effects especially when in interaction with other drugs used for heart diseases such as angina and others. The side effects of this products can affect heart patients, especially those who are using medications containing nitrates, and can lead to severe hypotension leading to cardiac arrest and death, he said.
DGPADC has added a page in the MoH website publishing the names of herbal medicines and other products banned in the sultanate.
