(MENAFN- Arab Times) 'Professors accused of plagiarism promoted'
KUWAIT CITY, Jan 17: MPs Khalid Al-Shatti and Majed Al-Mutairi raised questions against the Minister of Education and Higher Education concerning suspicious researches and promotion of professors who were accused of plagiarism, reports Al-Qabas daily.
MP Al-Shatti said several professors, teaching staff and researchers in the ministries, government agencies, and colleges, in addition to medical and research centers were deeply involved in publishing 84 research papers in a suspicious Indian journal whose management is at Hyderabad in India. He asked if the ministry has a clear strategy and specific plan to curb academic corruption. He also inquired if the ministry organized activities such as conferences, workshops and meeting of specialists to deliberate on the process of standing firm against academic corruption.
Meanwhile, MP Al-Mutairi threw a question at the minister concerning administrative and financial violations in colleges affiliated to the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training. He wanted to know if the administration truly appointed the son of Director General of the institution as academic staff at the College of Business Studies in defiance of the decision of the concerned department indicating he was not suitably qualified. He also asked the minister to confirm or deny the allegation that Dean of the College of Business Studies was promoted from the rank of Associate Professor to full Professor without fulfilling stipulated conditions.
Former Municipal Council member Abdullah Al-Kandari says the claims made by the government about deficit in the state budget were not true, stressing that the government wants to keep the citizens busy in thinking about the future, reports Al-Shahed daily. He called for the cancellation of the Municipal Council as it has no validity or jurisdiction. Al-Kandari stressed that the law that passed it marginalized the role of Members of Parliament completely, indicating that it was on this basis that he decided to contest in the parliamentary elections to make the required reforms. He affirmed the need to hold influential persons who dared to infringe and trespass on state properties accountable, adding that the State Audit Bureau does not have claws and it cannot take any legal procedures against them. Regarding the Silk City Project, Al-Kandari explained that, 'The city should have been named Bubble City (a living fantasy) because it has been draining public funds. When it was proposed in the 70s, the estimated cost then was KD 150 billion. Later, officials reviewed the project in the 80s and valued it at KD 250 billion; but now they are estimating the cost to be about 500 billion. The government must be transparent here'.
