Sri Lanka to purchase 50 electric buses to improve public transport

The buses will be purchased for the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB), the Government said today.

The Government said that cabinet approved a proposal put forward by Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva to purchase the buses.

SLTB has 6300 buses in running condition and 2,467 buses which are older than 10 years.

Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said that the SLTB needs 7257 buses to be deployed according to a time table and presently 100% of these buses run on diesel.

Hence it was decided to purchase 50 electric buses to establish a Bus Rapid Transit System. (Colombo Gazette)
