Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will visit the Vatican on Feb. 5 at the invitation of Pope Francis, Turkish media reported Jan. 16.
It is expected that the US decision to declare Jerusalem as the capital of Israel will be discussed within the framework of the visit.
Erdogan's visit to the Vatican will be the first one for the last 59 years at the level of the head of the Turkish state.
In 2014, Pope Francis visited Turkey.
On Dec. 6, 2017, US President Donald Trump proclaimed that the US recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Israel proclaimed Jerusalem its capital after the end of the War of Independence in 1949. In 1967, after the Six Days War, it seized East Jerusalem and united it with the West Jerusalem, but the UN did not recognize this. Embassies of countries that have diplomatic relations with Israel are located mainly in Tel Aviv, Herzliya and Ramat Gan.
