Japan: court charges sumo champion Harumafuji with assault

(MENAFN) Amid a brutal scandal in the sumo world, Japanese ex-sumo grand champion Harumafuji aged 33 has been charged with assault after attacking a junior wrestler.

The sumo champion is ahead of a summary indictment which can lead for his verdict to be a fine instead of standing before court in a trial.

The athlete confessed to assaulting the victim with a karaoke remote control, however he didn't admit to using a beer bottle while beating him. According to local press, he expressed his regrets to the police saying "I'm truly sorry for hurting Takanoiwa mentally and physically."
