Dairy Council of California Announces Retirement of 2 Directors

(MENAFNEditorial) SACRAMENTO, Calif., Dec. 20, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --When Mary Anne Burkman joined Dairy Council of California as a project manager for nutrition education and communication in 1991, the U.S. Department of Agriculture promoted the "Basic Four" food groups: Vegetables and Fruits; Milk; Meat; and Cereals and Breads. By 2000, when Douglas T. Bauser joined the organization as director of accounting and finance, nutrition guidance expanded to five food groups arranged in a Food Guide Pyramid.

At the end of 2017, when both Burkman and Bauser will retire from Dairy Council of California, the five food groups are arranged in MyPlate. While the food groups and nutrition guidance icons have changed over time, science shows milk's package of nine essential nutrients with unique interaction remain irreplaceable—much like the contributions both Burkman and Bauser have made to the organization.

"Mary Anne and Doug have made incredible contributions to Dairy Council of California and to elevating the health of kids and parents," said Tammy Anderson-Wise, Dairy Council of California CEO. "As Dairy Council of California approaches its 100-year anniversary, I am confident that both Mary Anne's and Doug's efforts over the years position us for ongoing success. Together with the board of directors and the staff, we wish them health, happiness and well-deserved retirement."

In a tenure spanning over two decades, Burkman played an increasingly prominent role in directing outreach efforts to community health and school audiences. She has overseen the development of nutrition education programs for adults and children ages preschool to high school.

Burkman's service to dairy farm families and milk processors received international recognition this fall when she was awarded the International Dairy Federation Volunteer Recognition Award for her skill in translating scientific language into practical information.

Prior to joining Dairy Council of California, Burkman worked for 10 years as a lecturer and director of dietetics training programs at the University of California, Berkeley. She also worked several years as a clinical dietitian in medical centers in Los Angeles and San Francisco. A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Burkman earned bachelor's and master's degrees in Public Health from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Bauser is also retiring in December after a long tenure with Dairy Council of California. Bauser's impeccable work ethic has greatly benefited the organization for the 17 years that he has managed the accounting and finance functions.

Bauser holds a Bachelor of Science in accounting from the University of California, Berkeley and a Master of Business Administration in finance from Golden Gate University in San Francisco.

Burkman's and Bauser's job responsibilities will be redistributed through internal promotion and reorganization.
