Turkey will strengthen border control procedure for Russian tourists arriving at Istanbul airport, the Aksam newspaper reported on December18.
This decision was made at a meeting of the Turkish and Russian presidents held in Sochi on November22, according to the report.
The report says that this step is aimed at ensuring the Russian tourists' security and preventing attempts of terrorist attacks that can be committed after the normalization of relations between the two countries.
After passing the passport control, Russian tourists will have to go through another two checkpoints.
The relations between Moscow and Ankara deteriorated sharply in late 2015 when Turkey shot down a Russian Su-24 bomber with two pilots on board. In June 2016, Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sent a letter of condolences to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin over the death of a Su-24 pilot and expressed regret over the incident.
