Kuwaiti officials urge ICT promotion


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) By Salem Al-Methen KUWAIT, Dec 18 (KUNA) -- Kuwaiti officials on Monday underlined the significance of promoting the role of information and communication technology (ICT) in securing economic growth and encouraging vital industries.

Speaking to KUNA on the sidelines of a seminar organized by Huawei Technologies Co. on ICT, the officials said investment in this sector generates positive social and economic impacts on labor and society alike.

Acting Director-General of the Central Agency for Information Technology Qusai Al-Shatti said the ICT sector is of paramount importance to comprehensive economic and social development that directly reflects on the citizens' life and welfare.

He hailed Huawei's significant role in the development of network systems and revamp of other industries and sectors in the country, adding that Kuwait has capitalized on its services through developing its huge development projects.

Director-General of the Public Authority for Industry Abdelkareem Taqi said the ICT sector has become one of the modern indicators for the improvement of institutional performance in all the country's systems.

He added that the authority's role in developing industrial activities requires the introduction of ICT in a more effective manner, noting that the sector has been using digital technology since 2000.

He pointed to the efforts exerted by the authority to attract investments and foreign investors and to spur and stimulate Kuwaiti exports.

Huawei's CEO in Kuwait Trevor Liu said in a press release that digital transformation is a governmental priority, stressing his company's commitment to working with the public sector.

He added that digital transformation would certainly create various opportunities for addressing new challenges in all industries, encourage sustainable growth and boost efficiency.

The one-day seminar is part of the company's initiatives aiming at stimulating dialogue with its partners in the ICT sector and Kuwaiti officials on the crucial role of this sector. (end) skm.ht.mt
