iPhones get costlier in India after customs duty hike
18 Dec 2017

The government's import duty hike on mobile phones has led to a rise in prices of Apple's iconic iPhones.

This applies to every model except the iPhone SE, which is assembled in India.

All imported smartphones other than Apple too will see a price hike as customs duty is increased from 10% to 15%.

Here's how much iPhones in India will cost now.

iPhone X (64GB) will now cost Rs. 92,430 (up from Rs. 89,000), and the 256GB variant, Rs. 1,05,720 (up from Rs. 1,02,000).

Price of iPhone 8 has risen from Rs. 64,000 to Rs. 66,120; and 8 Plus from Rs. 73,000 to Rs. 75,450.

Hike

Customs duty on smartphones, digital cameras, video recorders etc has been hiked by 5%, while that on microwave ovens, lamps etc has been increased by 10%.

However, this won't impact imports from countries like Malaysia and Thailand, with which India has free trade agreements.

The hike is expected to give a boost to local producers, create jobs and increase government revenue.
