Pakistan- Official suspended for 'forcing' Sikhs to convert to Islam


(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) HANGU, 17 December: An assistant commissioner, who allegedly forced members of the Sikh minority community to change religion, has been suspended by the provincial government.

A jirga of the Sikh community was held here on Sunday, which was attended by District Nazim Mufti Ubaidullah, Deputy Commissioner Shahid Mehmood, JUI-F's senator Maulana Atta ur Rahman, district councilor Fareed Chand Singh and elders of the minority community.

The deputy commissioner and other notables while speaking to the jirga lauded the services of the Sikh community in the development of the country. They said that people of the Sikh community have rendered great sacrifices for the country.

The deputy commissioner apologized to the Sikh community over the remarks of the Tall's assistant commissioner Yaqoob Khan, who according to media reports, allegedly forced Sikhs to convert to Islam. The deputy commissioner assured that the issue would be resolved. He also informed the jirga participants that the said assistant commissioner had been suspended on the directives of the chief secretary.

Fareed Chand Singh, on behalf of the Sikh community, thanked the deputy commissioner and other notables for listening to their complaint and providing them moral support.

Earlier, Singh, in his compliant to the deputy commissioner alleged that the assistant commissioner of Tehsil Tall, Yaqoob Khan forced the community members to convert to Islam.
