Jordan- International Advisory Group recommends use of large nuclear reactors

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Amman, Dec. 16 (Petra)--The International Advisory Group (IAG) tasked with reviewing Jordan's progress in implementing its nuclear programme recommended that Jordan expand its options in diversifying energy resources to include large nuclear reactors and support them with Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) to address the increasing demand on energy in Jordan.

The recommendations came in a report prepared by the IAG , which is chaired by former premier Marouf Bakhit. The IAG was formed in November 2015 to provide consultations on the strategy to deal with nuclear waste, and the best options and mechanisms to finance the nuclear power plant.

Vice Chairman of Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC), Kamal Araj reviewed major recommendations of the IAG, which highlighted the importance of having large nuclear reactors and increasing the use of SMRs to deal with the increasing demand on energy.

According to Araj, the report urged Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC) to cooperate with the Energy & Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) to create and sustain a strong culture of safety taking into consideration openness, transparency and acceptance of challenge.

On Jordan nuclear reactor for research and training at the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), the group stressed the importance of promoting the nuclear reactor at JUST to become a regional center for educating and training nuclear engineers and physics students.

The group, which comprises experts in nuclear power, nuclear safety, nuclear regulation and other nuclear activities, issued its first annual report in July, 2016 and its second report in November 2017.
