A Filipino domestic worker in Brazil had to eat dog food to survive because her employers did not provide her with enough food, according to the British Broadcasting Corporation.

The domestic worker named Maria, 40, went to Brazil in October to work for a family of five in Sao Paulo, reported. She reportedly worked for 15 hours a day without any rest day. She also struggled with communication because she could not speak Portuguese.

She had no time to eat because of the large amount of work she had to do at her employer's home. One day while she was preparing food for the family's pet, Maria took some of the dog food for herself because she had not eaten for two days.

She considered killing herself by jumping out of the seventh-floor window of their residential building.

Maria also could not go outside, as her employers locked her in the house when they were out. They kept a watchful eye on her while they were at home.

However, Maria was able to escape one morning because the main door was left unlocked and the whole family was asleep.

She now works for a new employer and is happy there.
