Qatar- Over 13,000 participate in painting the largest portrait of Emir

More than 13,000 people participated in painting the biggest portrait of Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani called 'The Dignity Image launched by the Police College at Darb Al Saai.

'Among the prominent activities at the Police College pavilion this year is the activity of ‘The Dignity Image' of Emir to set a Guinness World Record, Director-General of the Police College Brigadier Mohammed Abdullah Al Muhana Al Marri said in a statement.

Around 7pm last night the number of participants reached exactly 13,038, and more than 14,000 people would be required to paint the portrait, in an attempt to set a Guinness World Record.

'The participation from people still continues and we are sure to reach the required number. Also there is an observing committee to register the number of participants and to ban any repeat of registration because any one allowed to participate only once, Al Marri added.

For his part, Captain Abdulrahman Al Suwaidi, officer at the Police College said: 'We are registering all information of the participants like ID number, age, nationality, time of registration, exit time, and which section of the portrait he or she painted. All these data are saved to give to Guinness.

'The registration mechanism is easy, and the last day of participation is December 16. On December 17 we will unveil the portrait because until now no one know about its details. It is the image of the Emir but no one knows how it is, he told The Peninsula.

Regarding the size of the portrait, Al Suwaidi said that the length is 12M and its width is 7M. The portrait will be presented to the Emir as a gift from people on the occasion of the National Day, he added.

In addition to Police College pavilion at Darb Al Saai, there are many other entities at the Ministry of Interior are participating in Darb Al Saai like General Directorate of Traffic, General Directorate of Civil Defence, National Command Centre (NCC), Criminal Investigation Department and The Penal and Correctional Institutions Department among others.

The pavilion of The Penal and Correctional Institutions Department of the Ministry of Interior include many artistic and manual products made by inmates.

The products are attracting a large number of visitors and some of these products such as paintings, wooden boxes and others have been sold to people. Earlier an officer at the department explained that half of the money being collected from the selling these products was for prisoners and their families while the other half will go to the Ministry to buy the raw materials for them.
